La mine la țară, în Oltenia, exista un obicei pe când eram copil: căratul apei. O persoană din sat îi dădea unui copil să îi aducă de la fântână sau pârâu găleți cu apă. Apa o folosea fie la udatul grădinii, la băut, la gătit sau la adăpatul animalelor. Nu-mi aduc aminte dacă și pentru spălat sau nu. Primele trei găleți se cărau pentru Dumnezeu, iar celelalte 44 pentru sufletul unei persoane vii sau moarte, după cum decidea cea care cerea căratul apei. Apa urma să fie folosită de suflet, fie viu sau mort, pe lumea cealaltă. Gălețile se însemnau pe o crenguță de mar prin crestare. Trebuiau sa fie 22 de cobilițe sau 44 de găleți. După ce acestea erau cărate, cel care a dat de cărat apa, slobozea pe o apă curgătoare acele găleți prin ruperea crenguței de măr în trei, prin aprinderea unei lumânări și punerea acesteia pe o coajă de nucă și prin rostirea unei rugăciuni. Am cărat apa doar o dată, pentru sufletul bunicului meu pe care nu l-am cunoscut niciodată, dar de care mă simt tare atașată. Așa că nu am reținut rugăciunea; știu doar că era ceva cu „Soare și stele”. Atunci când am cărat apa pentru bunicul Ștefan, sora mea a cărat pentru sufletul bunicii noastre care încă era în viață (ea a fost cea care ne-a dat să cărăm apa și pentru bunicul Stefan și pentru ea), iar verișoara mea căra pentru cineva din sat. Cea care a cărat apele primea : bani, prosoape, o pătură, o farfurie, o lingură, o furculiță și o cană. Este posibil să fi primit și ceva gen cearceaf, dar nu îmi mai amintesc bine. Din ce spunea bunica din aceste obiecte fata își strângea zestre. Banii cred că au fost adăugați ulterior ca să facă căratul apei mai tentant. O caracteristică interesantă era faptul că apa o puteau căra doar fetele cărora nu le venise încă ciclul.

Even „a căra apele” it translates „to carry water for someone” I will use the expression „to bring water for someone”. Because I feel that it is more correct in this way and because the water is brought for both living and dead people and for using it to water the grass, to drink it, to cook with it and to give it to animals.

In my village, in Oltenia, there was a custom when I was a child: bringing of the water for someone. A person in the village gives a child to bring him water from the well or from the stream buckets of water. He used the water either to water the garden, to drink, to cook or to give it to the animals. I don’t remember if it was also for washing or not. The first three buckets were carried for God, and the other 44 for the soul of a living or dead person, as decided by the one asking for the bringing of water. The water was to be used by the soul, whether alive or dead, in the afterlife. The buckets were indented on an apple branch. There had to be 22 „cobiliță” or 44 buckets. After these buckets were brought, the one who asked the bringing of the water, released those buckets on a running water by breaking the apple branch into three, by lighting a candle and placing it on a walnut shell and by saying a prayer. I carried the water only once, for the soul of my grandfather whom I never met, but to whom I feel very attached. So I did not withhold the prayer; I just know it was something with „Sun and Stars”. When I brought the water for grandfather Stefan, my sister brought for the soul of our grandmother who was still alive (she was the one who asked us to bring the water for both grandfather Stefan and for her), and my cousin brought for someone from the village. The one who bring the water received: money, towels, a blanket, a plate, a spoon, a fork and a cup. It is possible that he also received something like a sheet, but I don’t remember well. From what the grandmother said, the girls collected their dowry from these objects. The money I think was added later to make bringing the water more tempting. An interesting feature was the fact that only girls who had not yet had their period could carry the water.
